History of Alpaca Farming

There are many types’ of mammals on planet earth. Some of the mammals are domesticated for various reasons like field work, fur, skin, fleece, milk, etc. Alpacas are one of the mammals that have been domesticated by the humans for more than 6000 years. The specialty is: They give fine quality fleece, which has huge demand all over the world. The Alpaca Farm History is long and plays a significant role in the market. The Alpacas are priced high for their silky fleece. This animal also looks so adorable with their fluffy hair.

In the earlier or primitive days, Alpacas were found flourishing in South America. Its fleece was mainly reserved for Incan royalty. The invasion and conquest of Incas by Spanish led to the annihilation of the Alpacas. However, some of the animals survived due to its capability to sustain inclement weather condition, which is not suitable for survival for other domestic animals. The greatness of the Alpacas fiber was known to people during the mid-1800s. Since then, the Alpacas gained more popularity among the masses.

Today, this mammal is being raised in countries like Australia, US, and the UK. Today, the growing population of the Alpacas is not only limited to South America. This animal is being imported to other countries. The governments of various South American countries have taken extreme steps to preserve these mammals. There are many advantages in starting an Alpaca farm. First of all, this mammal is capable of surviving the tough winter conditions. In case of other animals, you need to take adequate precautionary measures to protect the farm animals from the winter stress. This not required if you are farming Alpacas.

There are two types of Alpacas namely – Huacaya Alpacas and Suri Alpacas. The Huacaya Alpacas are known for their fluffy fibers, which is similar to those of teddy bears. These Alpacas are cuddly, and hence they are loved by people all around the world. They are easier to raise on the farm, and their silks can also be processed easily. Suri Alpacas has soft and curly hair, which is very expensive in the International market.

There are plenty of good reasons why you should start an Alpaca farm. Having an Alpaca farm can help you earn more money. You will be able to make more money by selling its fiber. There is significant demand for its silk, and hence you will not have any silk left unsold. Moreover, the meat of Alpacas is also gaining popularity, thereby increasing your money-making prospects. These animals are easy to train and remain very friendly to the humans.

Before you start your Alpacas farm, you should obtain the required license from the regulatory authority. You will also need a business attorney, who will provide suggestions and take care of the business matters about selling the fleece or silk. A huge investment is required for starting an Alpacas farm. You may have to gather funds through government grants or bank loan.
